Born in to a family that had a rich tradition of social
work and philanthropy the Late Gopalrao Apte, the founder
of Vidya Mahamandal, was the son of the Laxmanrao Apte.
Laxmanrao Apte a legendary teacher and recipient of the
Raibahadur, was renowned for his compassion towards his
students, and had given shelter and a home to many a student
in need.
With such an inspiration, it came as a no great surprise
that Gopalrao himself was motivated to setup an educational
institution which would impart quality education to one
and all.
With this dream
in the year 1961 Vidya Mahamandal Society was founded,
along with a group of similarly inspired individuals,
who became the founder members. 6000 sq. ft. of land
belonging to the Apte family was donated to the Vidya
Mahamandal Society for this purpose.
The founder members of Vidya Mahamandal namely P. G.
Vaidya, N. C. Joshi, V. G. Apte and M. D. Paranjape
set to work with zeal. Their ardent efforts paid off
in a very short time. Encouraged and pleased with this
progress, the late Gopalrao Apte once again donated
his family land, this time 13000 sq. ft. to the Society.
Thus today, the Vidya
Mahamandal Family, with its various educational institutes
stands on this land donated generously by the Apte Family.
Thousands of students today are studying in the various
educational institutes of the Vidya Mahamandal.
